It’s Easy Being Green: The Rise of Eco-Friendly Workplace Design
Alex Kirkup-Lee • Jul 29, 2022

The rise of the green workplace has every organisation searching for more ways to be environmentally friendly. Once considered a higher-end option, opting for greener designs is now on the verge of becoming a necessity.

One of the reasons for this is due to the evidence emerging that correlates employee productivity with ‘green’ offices. Employees have been found to be more productive and satisfied in an environment that supports sustainability. With this in mind, companies are looking more closely at the environmental impacts of their workplaces as they move towards carbon net-zero.

Is Eco-Friendly Office Design More Expensive?

Eco-friendly office design has a reputation for being costly because it requires additional planning and sourcing of more ‘unusual’ materials. However, this isn’t always the case. While sustainable design may come with a higher upfront price tag, it can save your business significant amounts in the long run.

What Are a Few of the Ways Offices Can Be Designed in a More Sustainable Way?

Select More Efficient Materials

Material efficiency is crucial to any green office. This means selecting materials that are more sustainable, both for the exterior and interior. This can include using more natural materials, such as wood, reusing old materials or selecting materials that are made from a high level of recycled content.

For example, for a food supplier in Berkshire, we selected carpet made from recycled fishing nets, obtained from suppliers involved in an imaginative initiative, in partnership with the Zoological Society of London. The scheme is designed to tackle the growing environmental problem of discarded fishing nets in some of the world’s poorest coastal communities, while also providing a source of income for the local people that collect them.

Insulation and Air Conditioning

While adding insulation can sometimes seem like a costly investment, the significant reduction of power that’s required in the office over a longer period of time could mean that you make savings where it matters. This is particularly important for warehouses, where we ensure that offices and staff areas are insulated, so as not to waste money heating the whole warehouse. In fact, adding insulation can increase energy efficiency by as much as 40%.

We can install Heat Recovery air conditioning systems, which provide fresh filtered air and recover normally wasted heat. Well designed and implemented, heat recovery air conditioning can reduce building heating costs by 40 to 50 per cent.

Optimise Lighting

According to Architecture Now, workers in office environments with natural sunlight noted a 15% increased level of wellbeing, were 61% more productive and 15% more creative in their work environment. We consider the use of daylight when creating spaces to make them healthy and to improve physical and mental wellbeing. By combining good daylight provision with LED lighting, significant energy savings can be made, as well as improvements to employee wellbeing.

Cover

‘Covering’ noise means that the unwanted sound is masked by new, computer-generated sound. These are usually natural noises that people are used to hearing, such as white noise or nature sounds. Although this doesn’t eliminate noise completely, unlike the other solutions, covering makes the noise disappear enough so that it doesn’t cause distraction.

This is particularly useful for situations where privacy, rather than noise, is the main cause of concern. If the frequency of the introduced sound matches that of the voices in the room, it becomes harder to distinguish between the two and supports concentration for more focused work.
